This incredible shot was taken at 35,000 feet with my trusted Sony camera, about halfway between St. Barts and New York City,
at about 8PM. Click on it to enlarge it and see the sliver of a moon.
The sunset lasted a good hour, and the layers of color kept getting more intense, trippy and beautiful as the sky darkened.
A surrealistic sky like this seemed the perfect way to capture that crazy, magic thrill of being transported from one experience to an entirely different one, simply by boarding a jet plane. I think that is one of the most amazing thing about modern travel ... that ability to change worlds in a matter of hours.
It was 82 degrees and sunny when I got on this plane. It has been 33 degrees and precipitating since I returned to New York. This is the sunset that divided those two worlds.
Once flew to the side of a thunderstorm our plane was skirting. It was thrilling to watch, from high up in the clouds, without being in any danger. If one can overcome the fear, flying can be one of the most magical experiences.
