what strategy did she recommend for annoying children and screaming babies?

For long flights, I usually pack a small paperback I've had for a couple of years: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SERIAL KILLERS. If my seatmate tries to strike up a conversation, I pull it out and start reading. Usually it stops the conversation dead, so to speak.
