In our politically divided country, it can feel like nothing ever gets done and positive change may never happen. The Republican response to Obama's "Change You Can Believe In" victory in 2008 was 4 years working to block any change whatsoever.
So how great it to realize that -- after a near three year blogging hiatus -- we have actually achieved major change on the same-sex marriage issue. One of my final posts was on the failure of New Jersey to approve same-sex marriage (though civil unions are allowed) three years ago. While NJ is still in the wrong place on the issue due to a fat, arrogant, bizarely popular governor, today nine state governments have approved same-sex marriage and several other states have created legal unions offering varying subsets of the rights and responsibilities of marriage. It's palpable progress, and Obama's 2nd term inauguration speech all but insures continued movement in the right direction.
Positive social change is hard-won and slow in the making. But when you get there, it feels so good. It's nice to see a gap in my blog post reminding me of the need for patience.
